The Philippine‑Go Association (Ph‑Go) successfully organized the First Philippine‑Go “Talaghay” Tournament on 31 January 2026 at ESG, HSC, GHQ, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. This landmark event brought together Filipino Go enthusiasts from across the country, strengthening bonds within the community and showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship.
The initiative began in November 2025, when the newly elected officers of Ph‑Go sought to revive national gatherings after a long hiatus. A formal announcement was posted on the association’s Facebook page, inviting all Filipino Go players to participate. To encourage inclusivity, the organizers waived registration fees, ensuring that anyone interested could join.
Although early registration numbers were modest, with only 12 players signed up a week before the event, President Ronald J. Mañeje pushed forward, as the minimum requirement of 10 players was met. On the day itself, enthusiasm exceeded expectations, with 18 players ultimately participating.
The tournament began promptly at 9:00 AM and concluded around 4:00 PM. Vice‑President Wynchelle G. Oamil opened the event with a warm welcome and rule orientation, followed by a motivational speech from President Mañeje, who emphasized professionalism, respect, and camaraderie.
The format featured 15 minutes main time with a 5‑second increment per move, with each participant playing five games. Rankings were determined by total wins, with tie‑breakers resolved through additional matches. After the final scores were tallied, awards were immediately presented to the top performers. Every participant also received a certificate and souvenirs from Ph‑Go as a remembrance of the tournament.
The event’s success was made possible through the support of HJJ Go from Taiwan and sponsorship from the Department of National Defense. Special recognition goes to the Ph‑Go officers — Ronald J. Mañeje (President), Wynchelle G. Oamil (Vice‑President), Miguel Chicano Villarico, Cherry Lyn Catayas Requina, and Joylyn Falcon Rubi — as well as contributors Michael Galero, John Erickson Javier, Cherisse May Aguilon, and Alanie Paet, who dedicated their time to ensure smooth execution.
The 1st Talaghay Tournament was more than a competition; it was a celebration of unity, resilience, and the growing passion for Go in the Philippines. With this successful beginning, the community eagerly anticipates the 2nd Philippine‑Go “Talaghay” Tournament in 2027, which promises to be even bigger and more vibrant.
